The term "maximizer" describes an individual who strives to make the best possible decision in every situation, relentlessly seeking the optimal outcome. This isn't simply about wanting high-quality results; it is a deep-seated need to explore all available options and select the absolute best one, even if the difference between choices is marginal.

The idea became widely known in behavioral psychology through the work of Barry Schwartz, who contrasted maximizers with "satisficers." Satisficers are content with finding an option that meets their basic criteria; for them, "good enough" is enough to move forward. Maximizers, however, feel internally compelled to evaluate every possibility before making a choice, a habit that often leads to "analysis paralysis" and post-decision regret.

You might encounter the term in discussions about decision-making, consumer behavior, or even game theory. In an auction, for example, a maximizer would meticulously calculate their bid to ensure they win the item at the most efficient price point possible. In everyday life, it manifests as the person who spends hours researching a product before buying it, constantly comparing technical features and reading every review.

While ambition and a desire for quality are generally seen as positive traits, Schwartz argues that the act of maximizing can be exhausting and ultimately lead to less happiness than the act of satisficing.
