The word "mastodon" conjures images of a lost world—a time when massive mammals roamed landscapes now covered by modern cities and farms. Mastodons were large, herbivorous mammals that lived during the Pleistocene epoch (roughly 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). They weren't dinosaurs; those died out much earlier. Instead, mastodons were relatives of modern elephants and members of the biological order called Proboscidea.

What set mastodons apart? Their teeth. Unlike mammoths, which were better adapted for grazing on grasses in open country, mastodons had cone-shaped cusps on their molars that were well suited to crushing twigs, leaves, and branches in wooded environments. This is one reason they are strongly linked with forests rather than the open grasslands often associated with mammoths.

Fossil discoveries across North America show that mastodons lived in places where early humans were also present, and people may have hunted them. Their extinction around 11,000 years ago remains a topic of scientific debate. Many scientists think a mix of climate change and human pressure played a role.

Interestingly, the name "mastodon" comes from Greek roots: mastos, meaning "breast," and odous (root odont-), meaning "tooth." This refers to the nipple-like projections on their molar crowns. So, quite literally, the name means "nipple tooth!"

Today, mastodons live on in museums and scientific studies, reminding us of a time when giants walked the earth and offering clues about our planet's changing past. You might also see "Mastodon" used as the name of a social network, where the animal's name is borrowed for a modern purpose.
