A marmoset is a very small New World monkey from South America, usually placed in the family Callitrichidae. Most species are light, quick, and built for life in the trees. They are best known from places such as Brazil and the Amazon region, though different species live in somewhat different habitats. When people picture one, they often imagine a tiny monkey with a long tail, alert eyes, and fast movements through the branches.

One reason these animals are so interesting is their family life. Marmosets often live in small groups, and the young are not cared for by the mother alone. Fathers and older siblings may help carry, protect, and feed the babies. They also communicate with high, sharp calls, which help group members keep track of one another in dense forest.

Their bodies are well suited to this way of life. On most of their fingers and toes they have claw-like nails rather than the flatter nails common in many other primates, which helps them cling to bark and climb tree trunks. Many species also feed on tree sap or gum, using their teeth to open holes in bark. They also eat insects, fruit, and other small foods.

You are most likely to meet the word "marmoset" in writing or speech about wildlife, zoos, tropical forests, or unusual small monkeys. In older stories, they may appear as exotic pets, but that idea ignores their complex needs and social nature. When the word comes up, it usually points to a tiny, active, highly social monkey living among branches and depending on close family cooperation.
