The word "manger" first meant a trough or open container that held food for livestock. You can picture a wooden or stone box in a stable or barn, filled with hay or grain so that animals could eat from it easily. It was a practical part of daily farm life and helped feed animals when they were kept indoors.

But the word has a much wider meaning in culture because of its role in the Christian Nativity story. In that story, the baby Jesus is laid in a manger after his birth. This image gives the word a strong sense of humility, simplicity, and a holy beginning in an ordinary place.

Because of this, the manger became an important Christmas symbol. Nativity scenes, also called crèches or nativity sets, often show the infant Jesus lying in one. As a result, the word can suggest peace, reverence, hope, and the quiet mood of Christmas.

Although people today may not often talk about real feeding troughs, the idea of a manger still appears in art, songs, stories, and religious practice. So when you hear the word "manger," it may mean a simple place where animals feed, but it may also point to the Christmas story and the idea of a humble beginning.
