malleus

The word malleus comes directly from the Latin for "hammer." In ordinary English, people usually just say "hammer," but malleus still has an important place in technical language. In anatomy, it is one of the three tiny bones of the middle ear. It is attached to the eardrum and passes sound vibrations to the incus, the next bone in the chain. Its name comes from its hammer-like shape, not because it literally pounds like a tool.

Beyond anatomy, the word is most famously, and disturbingly, linked to the Malleus Maleficarum, a late 15th-century book whose title means "The Hammer of Witches." The text became strongly associated with the persecution of people accused of witchcraft in Europe. In that title, the image of the hammer suggests harsh force rather than skilled workmanship.

In literary or rhetorical writing, malleus can also be used metaphorically for something that hits hard or comes down with great force, though this use is uncommon. A writer might use it to give a sentence a learned or dramatic tone. From the delicate workings of the ear to the grim language of history, malleus carries the image of a hammer into very different parts of English.
