The word "malarial" is mainly used for things connected with malaria, the disease spread by mosquitoes. It can describe an illness caused by malaria, a fever linked to malaria, or a place where malaria is common. If someone speaks of a "malarial region" or a "malarial swamp," they mean an area where the disease is likely to spread.

The word comes from mala aria, Italian for "bad air," from an old belief about what caused the disease. Today, though, the meaning is straightforward: it points to malaria itself or to conditions associated with it.

"Malarial" is an adjective used for something that relates to malaria or is affected by it. The most direct use is medical: a doctor might speak of a "malarial fever" or a "malarial infection" when the disease is involved. It is also often used for places or conditions where malaria is present or likely to spread, such as a "malarial district," a "malarial climate," or a "malarial swamp."
