The word "mafia" has a complicated history and is most closely connected with Sicily. Its exact origin is uncertain, and stories about its earliest meaning are often mixed with legend. What is clear is that by the 19th century, the term was being used for secret criminal groups that used threats, violence, and local influence to control businesses, land, and people.

Over time, these groups became more organized and more powerful. In modern use, "the mafia" often refers especially to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and related Italian crime groups. These organizations are known for extortion, illegal trade, murder, corruption, and a strict culture of silence, often called omerta, which discourages cooperation with the police. They are usually described as having a strong hierarchy, deep internal loyalty, and a willingness to use fear to keep control.

Today, "mafia" is also used more broadly for other organized crime networks, even when they are not Italian. In casual speech, people may even use it loosely for any secretive and powerful group that seems to control things from behind the scenes, though that use is more figurative than literal.

In books, films, and television, the mafia is often shown as both glamorous and brutal, which has made the word famous far beyond its historical roots. But in real life, it refers to organized criminal power built on intimidation, secrecy, and illegal activity.
