machair

The word machair comes from Gaelic and refers to a rare kind of coastal grassland found mainly on the western shores of Scotland and Ireland. It is more than just a field by the sea; it is a low, open plain that forms over centuries on sand enriched with crushed shells. Wind, waves, and sometimes seaweed all help shape it, and the result is a surprisingly fertile soil even though the ground is sandy underneath.

These landscapes are never completely still. They shift with weather, wind, and the slow movement of sand. In spring and summer, they can become bright with wildflowers, drawing in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
