The word lux is used first of all in science and lighting. It is the standard SI unit of illuminance, meaning the amount of light that falls on a surface. One lux equals one lumen per square meter. Because of that, the word is common in technical settings such as architecture, photography, workplace lighting, screen testing, and safety rules. In these contexts, it is often written as lx. For example, a guide might say that an office desk should have around 500 lx for comfortable reading.

The word also has a second layer because lux is the Latin word for "light." That is why it appears in school mottos, church writing, book titles, and learned or poetic phrases. In those cases, it keeps its older sense of literal or symbolic light. This Latin background is real and important, but it does not mean that modern English speakers usually use lux as an everyday poetic word.

So, when you see lux in modern English, you should usually think of measurement: how much light reaches a table, road, room, or sensor. In older or more formal contexts, you may also see it as the Latin word for "light." What it normally does not mean is luxury, splendor, or refined style, even though those ideas may sound similar.
