Luminosity describes the intrinsic brightness of an object: how much light, or in some scientific contexts how much energy, it actually gives off, rather than how bright it merely appears to us. It is a concept that stretches from the everyday world to the vastness of space. Imagine two identical light bulbs, one close to you and one far away. They appear different in brightness, but their luminosity is the same because they emit the same amount of light. The difference in what you see comes from distance.

In astronomy, luminosity is a crucial measurement for understanding stars. A star's luminosity depends on its size and temperature, so bigger and hotter stars are generally much more luminous than smaller, cooler ones. Astronomers use luminosity to classify stars and understand how they change over time. They might say that Betelgeuse is a highly luminous red supergiant, meaning that it is an enormous star that sends out a tremendous amount of energy despite its relatively cool surface temperature.

But luminosity is not limited to celestial objects. It can also be used in art and design to describe the quality of light within a piece. A painting with rich color and careful shading might be described as having beautiful luminosity, suggesting that it seems to give off its own inner glow.

Even outside science and art, people sometimes use luminosity in a metaphorical way to suggest radiance or a striking presence. You might say someone has a kind of personal luminosity if they draw attention in a warm, natural way.
