Lorises are a group of relatively small, nocturnal primates found in the tropical rainforests of South and Southeast Asia. They are best known for their large, round eyes, which help them move through the dark, and for their slow, deliberate movements. There are several species, ranging from the slender lorises of India and Sri Lanka to the sturdier slow lorises of Southeast Asia. They feed on insects, fruit, tree gum, and other small animals.

These primates spend almost all their lives in the canopy, using a powerful, vice-like grip to cling to branches. Unlike many of their primate cousins, they are not agile jumpers; instead, they rely on staying still and moving quietly to avoid predators like snakes and eagles. Remarkably, slow lorises are among the few venomous mammals. They produce a toxin from a gland on the arm and lick it onto the teeth, which can make their bite dangerous.

Sadly, lorises face serious threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Their "adorable" appearance makes them targets for the exotic animal market, but removing them from the wild is devastating. This trade often involves the cruel practice of clipping their sharp teeth to prevent bites, which frequently leads to infection or death. Conservation efforts are now vital to protect these vulnerable creatures.

The word "loris" originates from the Dutch word "loeris," meaning "clown" or "simpleton." While they don't perform tricks, their cautious and quirky movements certainly give them a unique charm.
