The word "loosestrife" is a common name used for more than one group of flowering plants, especially Lysimachia and Lythrum. These plants do not all belong to the same botanical family, but many of them grow in damp ground and have showy flowers. Depending on the species, the blooms may be yellow, white, pink, or purple. The name is old and is tied to a traditional explanation that it could "loose strife," or calm conflict, especially among working oxen.
