A logogen is a theoretical unit in cognitive psychology, first proposed by John Morton in the late 1960s to explain how people recognize words. In the logogen model, each known word has its own mental unit. That unit gathers information from what a person sees or hears, along with clues from context and meaning. When the evidence for one word reaches a critical activation threshold, the unit responds and the word is recognized.
This helps explain why familiar words are usually recognized faster than rare ones. Words that appear often are thought to have lower thresholds, so they need less input before they are identified. For example, when you see a very common word such as "dog," your mind may recognize it almost at once because the needed evidence builds up quickly. The model was an important early attempt to describe the path from perception to word recognition.
In practical terms, the concept belongs mainly to theories of reading, listening, and lexical access. Today, people usually mention it when discussing the history of psycholinguistics or older models of word recognition, rather than as an everyday term in general English. Even so, it remains useful as a clear way to picture how the mind might collect signals until a word becomes available to awareness.
