Lithotripsy (pronounced lith-oh-TRIP-see) is a medical procedure used to break up stones inside the body, most often kidney stones or other stones in the urinary tract. The name itself gives you a clue: "litho" refers to stone, and "tripsy" relates to crushing.

The basic idea is to break a hard stone into smaller fragments so the body can remove them more easily. In many cases, this is done with focused shock waves sent from outside the body. In other cases, doctors use a scope and tools such as a laser to break the stone directly inside the urinary tract. Ureteroscopic lithotripsy is a minimally invasive option in which a small scope is passed into the urinary tract so the stone can be seen and broken with a laser or another tool. For larger stones, doctors may use other procedures that combine stone-breaking with direct removal.

Lithotripsy has become an important way to treat stone disease because it is usually less invasive than open surgery. It is generally safe and effective, though it can cause side effects such as bruising, blood in the urine, or temporary discomfort. Doctors usually consider it when a stone is causing pain, infection, blockage, or is unlikely to pass on its own.
