Listless describes a state of being drained of energy and enthusiasm. It is not simply physical tiredness, though that can certainly contribute. It is more about a lack of motivation or interest in anything around you. Someone who is listless feels apathetic, indifferent, and perhaps even slightly depressed. They might go through the motions of daily life, but they do so without any real engagement or enjoyment.

The word suggests a kind of emotional flatness, as if all your usual drives and passions have temporarily vanished. It often arises after periods of intense activity, illness, disappointment, or stress. A character in literature might become listless after heartbreak, losing a loved one, or facing a crushing defeat. You could say, "After weeks of rain, the town felt strangely listless," suggesting a collective mood of stagnation and a lack of spirit.

While temporary listlessness is common—we all have days where we feel unmotivated—prolonged or severe listlessness can be a symptom of underlying medical or psychological issues. It is fundamentally different from being "lazy"; it is a genuine inability to find the spark or desire to engage with life.
