The term "lexicographic" comes from "lexicography," the art and science of dictionary making. But its meaning goes beyond making dictionaries. It usually describes the way words, letters, or other sequences of characters are arranged in dictionary order, often alphabetically. This idea is useful anywhere information needs to be placed in a clear, predictable sequence.

Historically, lexicography was the careful work of scholars who recorded and explained words. Today, the same ordering idea also appears in programming, data handling, and search tools. In computer science, "lexicographic order" often means comparing text character by character, which is why "cat" comes before "dog," and "app" comes before "apple." In real systems, the exact order may also depend on rules for capitals, spaces, punctuation, accents, or language-specific letters. So when something is described as "lexicographic," it usually points to dictionary-style arrangement or to the rules behind that kind of ordering. A helpful way to picture it is a well-run library where every entry is placed in the one spot readers would expect to find it.
