A layby has two main uses in English, and the right one depends on the region and the situation. In British English, it usually means a widened area at the side of a road where a vehicle can pull in and stop safely without getting in the way of moving traffic. You often see laybys on country roads and major roads outside towns, where they give drivers a place to rest, check directions, make a phone call, or deal with a small problem with the car. A layby is not the same as a full service area or a normal car park; it is usually simpler and meant for short stops.

In Australian, New Zealand, and South African English, layby can also mean an arrangement in a shop where an item is kept for a customer while the customer pays for it over time. The buyer does not take the item home at once. Instead, the shop holds it until the final payment is made. In American English, this idea is usually called layaway.

Both senses come from the older idea of putting something aside for later. A car is moved aside from the main road, or a product is set aside until it has been fully paid for. Because of that shared idea, the word can feel very natural in both settings, even though the two uses are quite different. When you read or hear layby, the nearby words usually make the meaning clear right away.
