laugher

A2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /lˈɑːfə/

US

  • /ˈlɑkər/

Description

A laugher is a person who laughs a lot or laughs in a noticeable way. If someone is a big laugher, they may be the kind of person whose laugh fills the room. Do not confuse laugher with laughter. Laughter is the sound or act of laughing, while a laugher is the person doing it.

Laugher also has an informal meaning in sports and games: an easy, one-sided victory. If one team wins 10-0, someone might call it "a real laugher." In that sense, the game was so uneven that it almost seemed funny.
