Imagine a team where two people do different jobs because each one is better at a certain task. That kind of split is a good way to think about lateralization. In biology and neuroscience, it means that one side of the body or brain takes on more of a certain job than the other side. Most often, the word is used for the brain: for example, language is usually more strongly linked to the left hemisphere in most people. This does not mean the two sides work alone. They stay connected and work together, but some tasks are more centered on one side than the other.
Lateralization is the tendency for a function, skill, or activity to be more strongly linked to one side of the body or one half of a system than the other. The word is used most often in biology, psychology, and neuroscience, especially when talking about the two hemispheres of the brain. While the left and right hemispheres are closely connected and constantly share information, some abilities are more strongly centered in one hemisphere than the other.
In humans, the best-known example is language, which is usually more strongly lateralized to the left hemisphere, especially in right-handed people. Some other functions also show left-right differences, but these patterns are not absolute. There is a lot of overlap, and people vary. So the idea is not that one half of the brain "owns" everything of one kind, but that certain processes are more likely to depend more on one side.
The word can also be used more broadly for left-right preference or side-based specialization in living things. For example, researchers may talk about hand preference, eye preference, or one-sided behavior in animals as forms of lateralization. In medicine, it can describe symptoms or brain activity that appear more on one side than the other. In all of these uses, the core idea stays the same: one side is doing more, leading more, or showing a stronger role.
The term comes from the Latin lateralis, meaning "side." A simple way to remember it is this: when something is lateralized, it is not spread evenly across both sides. One side has become more important for that function.
