Langurs are Old World monkeys belonging to the subfamily Colobinae, native to the diverse forests of South and Southeast Asia. They are characterized by their slender builds, long limbs, and striking facial features. Their most defining physical trait is a long, non-prehensile tail that acts as a vital balancing pole as they navigate the high treetops. Unlike many other monkey species that scavenge for a wide variety of foods, langurs are specialized leaf-eaters. This diet requires a complex, multi-chambered stomach—similar to that of a cow—to break down tough plant cellulose.

Socially, langurs live in groups that vary by species. Some groups center on one adult male and several females, while others include multiple males. They spend a significant portion of their day grooming one another, which strengthens social bonds. Their communication includes calls, facial expressions, and body language that help signal danger, reinforce rank, or maintain group contact.

The name "langur" comes from Hindi. These primates also carry cultural importance, particularly in India, where some are associated with Hanuman, a figure linked with strength, loyalty, and courage.

While several species thrive, such as the widespread grey langur, others like the golden langur or the spectacled langur are increasingly rare. Today, many langur populations face threats from habitat fragmentation and hunting. Conservation efforts are essential to ensure these fascinating primates continue to leap through the forests. The langur remains a captivating symbol of agility, social connection, and the rich natural heritage of Asia.
