lamely

The word "lamely" has two main uses. First, in its more literal sense, it means "in a lame way" or "with a limp." You might use it to describe a person or animal moving with difficulty because of an injured leg or foot. In this sense, it points to uneven, awkward movement.

More often in modern everyday English, though, it is used figuratively. Here, lamely means weakly, poorly, or without much effect. Someone might apologize lamely if the apology sounds half-hearted. A student might answer a question lamely if the response is weak and does not really solve anything. A plan can fail lamely, and a joke can land lamely, leaving people unimpressed.

Think of a politician offering a thin defense, a friend making a poor excuse, or a story ending in a dull way. In all of these cases, lamely suggests that something lacks strength, skill, or force. It often carries mild criticism: the action was not just unsuccessful, but unimpressive.

So if someone walks with a limp, they may move lamely. And if an excuse, reply, performance, or attempt feels weak or unconvincing, it may also be done lamely.
