kitchen

A1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /kˈɪtʃən/

US

  • /ˈkɪtʃən/

Description

The kitchen is the room where people prepare and cook food, but it is often more than that. In many homes, it is a warm, busy place where people eat, talk, help with homework, or spend time together late at night. In stories and in real life, it is often the place where people share news, make plans, and build memories. Sometimes "kitchen" can also mean the people working in a restaurant cooking area, as in "the kitchen was very fast during the dinner rush." It also appears in expressions like "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen," which means that if you cannot handle pressure, you should leave the situation.
