Description

Imagine chromosomes as precious cargo being moved across a cell during division. The kinetochore is the sturdy hook or clamp on each chromosome that lets it attach to tiny cellular "tracks" called microtubules, so it can be pulled and sorted correctly. Without a working kinetochore, cells cannot divide properly, which can lead to genetic mistakes and serious disease.

These structures are made of many proteins and form at the centromere of each chromosome. They act as a special docking site between the chromosome and the microtubules of the spindle. Because they are so small, they usually cannot be seen clearly with a regular light microscope. When they do not work as they should, cells can end up with the wrong number of chromosomes, a problem linked to cancer and some developmental conditions such as Down syndrome.
