Think of it like this: if a byte is a single character, such as the letter "a" or the number "7," then a kilobyte is roughly enough space to store a short piece of text.
The term "kilo" comes from the metric system, where it means "thousand." But computers work in binary, so for many years people also used kilobyte for 1,024 bytes, because 1,024 is 2 to the power of 10. To make this clearer, the term "kibibyte" was introduced for 1,024 bytes, while "kilobyte" was kept for 1,000 bytes. Even so, many people still use "kilobyte" in the older way.
Historically, kilobytes were significant because they represented a practical amount of storage for early computing. Early computer games and operating systems were often optimized to fit within just a few hundred kilobytes. Today, kilobytes are considered relatively small; modern high-resolution images, songs, and applications are measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).
Despite its small size, understanding the kilobyte remains important because it helps explain all larger units of digital storage. You will still see it today when looking at small files, email attachments, or data transfer speeds, often shown as "kilobytes per second" (KB/s). You probably would not measure a modern hard drive in kilobytes, but it is still a basic part of how digital information is described.
