The word "junk" usually refers to things that are useless, unwanted, broken, messy, or of very low value. It often overlaps with ideas like trash, scrap, clutter, and odds and ends, but it is a little broader and more personal. What counts as "junk" depends a lot on who is speaking. One person may see an old chair as junk, while another sees something they can repair or reuse.

You will often hear "junk" when people talk about clutter, storage, cleaning, or getting rid of things. A basement, attic, shed, or spare drawer may slowly fill up with junk over the years. A garage sale may look like a pile of junk to one visitor and a set of useful bargains to another. The word is also common in set phrases. So the word often carries both judgment and point of view. In everyday English, it suggests that something is not worth much, not needed, or not worth keeping, even though someone else may see it differently.
