The word "junior" means lower in rank, younger in age, or less experienced than someone else. It is usually a comparative word, so a person is often junior to another person. In working life, it often marks an early stage in a career. For example, a "junior developer" usually handles simpler tasks and learns from more experienced coworkers.

In the United States and some other school systems, "junior" also has a specific noun use: it means a student in the third year of a four-year high school or college program. In American high school, that is usually 11th grade. In college, it is the year before senior year.

The word can also appear in names for institutions or levels. "Junior high school" refers to a school between elementary school and high school, though in many places people now say "middle school" more often. In sports, arts, and other organized activities, "junior" can also describe a younger age group or a lower level.

"Junior" is also used as a name suffix, often written as "Jr.," to tell a son apart from his father when they have exactly the same full name, such as Robert Jones Jr. and Robert Jones Sr. Across all these uses, the idea stays much the same: someone or something is younger, lower, or earlier in a sequence than another.
