Isoflurane is a volatile liquid anesthetic used to maintain general anesthesia in both humans and animals. It belongs to a class of drugs called inhalation anesthetics, which means it is delivered as a vapor that the patient breathes in. In some settings it may also be used to help induce anesthesia, although it is especially known for maintaining it during surgery.

The story of isoflurane begins with the need for safer and more controllable surgical anesthesia. Before its development in the 1960s, ether was commonly used, but it had significant drawbacks, including flammability and unpleasant side effects. Isoflurane offered major improvements in these areas, eventually becoming a cornerstone of modern operating rooms.

During surgery, isoflurane works by depressing activity in the central nervous system, helping produce unconsciousness and reducing awareness and movement. It is usually given along with oxygen, and often along with other anesthetic or pain-relieving medicines. An anesthesiologist carefully adjusts the concentration of isoflurane vapor and monitors the patient's vital signs, such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure, throughout the procedure.

Like other anesthetic agents, isoflurane can cause side effects. Some patients may have nausea, changes in breathing, or a temporary drop in blood pressure. These effects are usually managed by the anesthesia team as part of normal surgical care.

So, while you are unlikely to encounter isoflurane outside a hospital or veterinary setting, it plays a quiet but important role in modern medicine, allowing many procedures to be done safely while the patient remains unconscious.
