Ironwork is metal work made from iron, especially wrought iron, shaped into useful or decorative things. Picture the gate in front of an old house, the railing along a stairway, or the curved metal details on a lamp post.

The word can refer both to the craft and to the finished pieces themselves. In the past, blacksmiths made ironwork for buildings, tools, fences, balconies, and many other everyday needs. Today, even though steel is often used instead, the word still brings to mind strong, handmade work with a touch of beauty and history.
