ironwood

The term "ironwood" does not refer to just one tree. Instead, it is a common name used for different species around the world that are known for exceptionally hard, dense wood. These trees grow in many places, from tropical regions to temperate forests, and the name comes from how heavy and tough the wood seems compared with ordinary wood.

Different regions boast different "ironwoods." In North America, Ostrya virginiana (Eastern Hophornbeam) is a common example, while in Australia, several species of Eucalyptus and Acacia earn the title. Caribbean and South American forests also have their own varieties. Each boasts unique characteristics, but they all share that signature density and strength.

Historically, ironwood was highly valued for making tools, tool handles, strong building parts, and other durable items. Its resistance to wear made it useful wherever long life mattered. Today, while it can be expensive because some of these trees grow slowly and the wood is hard to work with, ironwood is still valued for specialized uses such as fine furniture, carving, some boat parts, musical instruments, and decorative turned objects.

The wood's density also makes it very heavy, so a small piece can weigh much more than a similar piece of common wood. Many kinds of ironwood are also valued for lasting well over time, though the exact properties differ by species. So when you hear "ironwood," think not of metal, but of a very hard, heavy, and long-lasting kind of wood known for its strength.
