Irascibility describes a tendency to become angry easily, and it's more than just having a bad day. It suggests a fairly steady pattern: the person gets annoyed quickly, has a short temper, and may react strongly to small problems. The word comes from the Latin irascor, meaning "to rage or be angry." While everyone feels frustrated sometimes, a person marked by irascibility feels that frustration more often and may respond with more anger than the situation seems to deserve.

You might describe a boss, a relative, or a public figure this way if they are known for snapping at people, complaining sharply, or flaring up without much warning. It's not necessarily about being always angry, but about having a low threshold for irritation. A politician known for fiery outbursts could be described as showing irascibility. However, it is not the same as a medical condition or a formal diagnosis; usually, it refers to a personality trait or a usual way of reacting.

Historically, a quick temper was sometimes linked with passion, pride, or strong character. Think of fiery heroes in older stories who were quick to defend their honor. Today, though, we usually see it as a negative quality, since it can strain relationships and create conflict. So if someone often snaps at others over trivial matters, they are showing irascibility: a simmering readiness to get angry with very little push.
