Imagine a recipe for making a delicious cake. Most of the ingredients end up in the final cake—flour, sugar, and eggs. But sometimes recipes include little notes to the baker, like "preheat oven" or "grease pan." These notes are important for the process, but they aren't part of the finished product!
An intron is similar in our genes. It is a section inside a gene that does not code for protein. The gene is first copied into RNA, and then this section is cut out during RNA splicing before the final message is used to make a protein. For a long time, people thought these parts did very little, but scientists now know they can help control gene activity and support evolution.
Introns are non-coding sequences found within genes. Think of a gene as a long sentence containing important information. Introns are like pieces within that sentence that are copied at first, but later removed before the final message is used.
The parts of a gene that do code for protein are called exons. When a gene is copied, the first RNA version contains both exons and introns. During RNA processing, the introns are removed, or spliced out, and the exons are joined together. This creates a mature messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule, which then guides protein production.
Scientists have discovered that introns are not useless. They often contain signals that help control when and where genes are turned on or off. They can also affect alternative splicing, a process in which different groups of exons are joined together. Because of this, one gene can sometimes lead to more than one protein.
Introns are especially common in many eukaryotes, including humans. Their presence and variety suggest that they have played an important role in evolution by allowing more flexibility in how genes are used. So while they do not directly code for proteins, they are far more than useless extra material. They are an important part of how genes are managed and expressed in living cells.
