intranet

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈɪntrənˌɛt/

US

  • /ˈɪntrənˌɛt/

Description

Imagine your school has a website everyone can see—that's the internet. But what if there were another online space, just for teachers and students to share information, assignments, and announcements? That's an intranet. It's a private network for people inside one organization, usually a company, school, or other group. Think of it as a digital hallway where people connect, work together, and get things done inside the organization, separate from the public web.

It's often used for internal messages, sharing documents, finding forms and policies, and making daily work easier. A hospital might use one to help staff find schedules and internal resources, or a marketing team might use one to track project progress. It's all about keeping things organized and private within the organization.
