The word intraluminal is a specialized term used mainly in scientific and medical fields. It combines the prefix "intra-", meaning "within", with "luminal", which refers to the lumen, the hollow interior of a tubular structure or organ. Many parts of the body have a lumen, including blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, the trachea (windpipe), and other passage-like structures.

So, intraluminal describes anything that exists or happens within that inner channel. For example, a clinician might measure intraluminal pressure to see the force created by fluid or gas inside a vessel or organ. They might also describe an intraluminal mass, blockage, or device, meaning that it is located in the open inner space rather than in the wall or outside the structure.

The term is often used to distinguish problems that occur within a tube from those that affect the wall of the tube itself or the tissues around it. For example, an intraluminal clot blocks blood flow from inside the vessel, while a problem in the vessel wall would not be described that way. In this sense, the word helps doctors and researchers describe location very precisely in anatomy, physiology, and disease.
