The term "interactionist" describes a person who believes that important parts of human life are shaped through interaction. The word is especially common in sociology, psychology, education, and related fields, but the exact meaning depends on the context.

In sociology, an interactionist focuses on how people create meaning through social contact. This idea is closely linked to symbolic interactionism, which looks at how language, gestures, labels, and other symbols gain meaning through use. From this view, people do not simply absorb a fixed social reality. They build shared understandings through everyday exchange, and those understandings then shape behavior. For example, a sociologist might study a classroom, a workplace, or an online group by looking at how people talk to one another, react to one another, and slowly form roles and expectations.

In psychology, "interactionist" often has a broader meaning. It can describe someone who argues that behavior or development comes from the interaction between different influences, rather than from just one source. For instance, an interactionist might say that personality grows from both natural traits and life experience, or that language learning depends on both inborn ability and social input. In this sense, the word points to a combined explanation rather than a single-cause explanation.

Because of that, the word often carries a simple core idea across fields: things happen through relationships, responses, and mutual influence. An interactionist is less likely to ask, "What is the one main cause?" and more likely to ask, "How do these people, forces, or conditions work on one another over time?"
