Intarsia is a decorative technique where pieces of different materials—most traditionally wood—are precisely cut and fitted together to form intricate designs or pictures. While it shares similarities with mosaic work, intarsia focuses on using the natural variations in wood grain, texture, and color to create a "painted" effect. The technique flourished during the Italian Renaissance, particularly in cities like Florence, where master craftsmen created elaborate panels for choir stalls, chests, and doors. These works were far more than simple decoration; they were statements of immense skill, patience, and artistic sophistication.

What sets intarsia apart from its close cousin, marquetry, is the method of construction. While marquetry typically involves applying thin veneers to a flat surface to create a pattern, intarsia historically involved fitting solid pieces of wood into a hollowed-out matrix or joining them as solid segments. Furthermore, while classical intarsia was often sanded flush to the surface, modern interpretations frequently vary the thickness and contour of the pieces to create a striking, three-dimensional relief effect that plays with light and shadow.

The term has also found a significant home in the fiber arts. In knitting, intarsia is a colorwork technique used to create large, multi-colored designs. Unlike "stranded" knitting, where multiple yarns are carried across the back of the work, intarsia uses a separate length or ball of yarn for each individual color block. This allows for bold, clear pictures—such as a single large motif or a geometric shape—to be knitted directly into the fabric without adding extra bulk. Whether in timber or textile, the essence of intarsia remains the same: the meticulous assembly of distinct parts to create a beautiful, unified whole.
