Indirection refers to the quality of approaching something through an intermediate step rather than dealing with it directly. In everyday language, it often describes speech or behavior that is roundabout, cautious, or evasive. Someone may speak this way to avoid sounding harsh, to stay polite, to protect feelings, or to hide what they really think. In that sense, it can seem graceful and tactful, but it can also seem slippery or dishonest.

This kind of roundabout expression has often been valued as a sign of social skill. In cultures or situations where blunt honesty feels rude or aggressive, people may rely on hints, tone, and implied meaning instead of plain statements. A careful compliment, a diplomatic answer, or a line in a novel that suggests more than it says all work through this slower, less direct path.

But the word is not limited to conversation. It is also widely used for cases where one thing is accessed, named, or controlled through another thing. In computing, for example, a program may use a pointer, reference, or layer of abstraction to reach data indirectly rather than holding the data itself in the most direct way. That is still indirection: the target is reached, but only through something in between.

Because of that, the word covers both social and technical use. A politician may use it to avoid a hard question. A writer may use it to build mystery and let readers infer the truth. A software engineer may use it to make a system more flexible by putting a layer between a name and the thing it points to. In every case, the core idea is the same: the meaning, action, or connection is real, but it arrives by a route that is not straight.
