Immunoreactivity describes the way a substance, cell, or tissue reacts with a specific antibody. In practice, the word is often used when doctors, pathologists, and researchers want to know whether a certain protein, antigen, or marker is present in a sample.

The idea is usually straightforward: if a sample shows immunoreactivity, the antibody used in the test reacted with something in that sample. Sometimes the reaction is strong, sometimes weak, and sometimes absent. That result can help experts describe what kind of cells they are looking at, compare healthy and diseased tissue, or support a diagnosis.

You'll encounter "immunoreactivity" mainly in pathology reports, lab notes, and scientific papers. A report might say that a tumor shows immunoreactivity for a certain marker, helping identify what type of tumor it is. In another case, brain tissue, skin, or blood cells may be described as immunoreactive for a specific protein. The term can also appear in studies of infection, inflammation, or autoimmune disease, but it does not always mean the whole immune system is actively responding at that moment.

It's important to note that immunoreactivity does not automatically mean disease. It simply means there was a detectable reaction with an antibody under the test conditions. The real meaning depends on what antibody was used, what sample was tested, and why the test was done. That is why the term is especially useful in careful medical and scientific interpretation.
