Imagine a scene from an old movie: someone laughing so hard they are crying, or someone screaming in total panic. That kind of reaction is often described as acting "hysterically." It means reacting with very strong emotion in a way that seems hard to control. People often use it for crying, shouting, or laughing. You might laugh hysterically at a silly joke, or someone might cry hysterically after hearing bad news. It can also describe something as extremely funny, as in "The film was hysterically funny." Because the word has a difficult history, it is best used with some care.

The word "hysterically" describes behavior that is extremely emotional and hard to control. It suggests a strong outburst of feeling, whether that feeling is joy, grief, fear, or anger. A person might laugh hysterically, cry hysterically, or shout hysterically. Today, "hysterically" usually describes an extreme emotional response. It is often used to stress how intense a reaction is, but it should be used thoughtfully. In some situations, it can make real distress sound less serious or echo old stereotypes about emotion. You might say a crowd screamed hysterically when a rock star walked onto the stage, or that a child was crying hysterically after getting lost for a moment. It is also commonly used for humor, especially in phrases like "hysterically funny," where it means extremely funny.

So "hysterically" points to an overwhelming burst of emotion, and sometimes to something being so funny that people cannot stop laughing. It is a vivid word, but because of its history and tone, it works best when used with care.
