Doctors monitor these levels using a pulse oximeter—that small, glowing clip placed on your finger—or through an arterial blood gas test to determine exactly how much oxygen is reaching your bloodstream.
Hypoxemia is a medical condition characterized by a lower-than-normal level of oxygen in the arterial blood. The etymology of the word provides a clear map of its meaning: the prefix "hypo-" means deficient, "ox-" refers to oxygen, and the suffix "-emia" denotes a condition of the blood. Therefore, it literally translates to "low oxygen in the blood." In a healthy individual, normal arterial oxygen levels typically range between 75 and 100 millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Hypoxemia is generally diagnosed when the partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) falls below 60 mmHg.
It is crucial to distinguish hypoxemia from dyspnea (the subjective sensation of shortness of breath). While dyspnea is a common symptom, hypoxemia is an objective, measurable physiological state. Various conditions can impair the body's ability to oxygenate blood. Lung diseases such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) interfere with the delicate membranes where oxygen enters the bloodstream.
Furthermore, heart problems that compromise circulation, such as congestive heart failure or certain congenital heart defects, can also lead to hypoxemia. Beyond shortness of breath, symptoms may include confusion, a rapid heart rate, and cyanosis (a bluish tint to the lips, skin, or fingernails).
