  • /haɪpˈɒtənjˌuːs/

US

  • /haɪˈpɑtənjus/noun

Description

Imagine building a ramp: that sloping side is like the hypotenuse. It is always the longest side in a right triangle, the kind of triangle that has one 90-degree angle. It also always sits opposite that right angle. You can picture a ladder leaning against a wall: the ladder is the slanted side across from the corner where the wall meets the ground.
