Hyperventilation is a condition in which someone breathes faster or deeper than the body needs, which lowers the level of carbon dioxide in the blood. It is often linked to anxiety or panic attacks, but it can also happen with physical problems such as asthma, lung disease, infections, pain, or some medicines.

The key is not only how fast you are breathing, but the imbalance it creates. Normally, your body keeps carbon dioxide at a steady level. When you breathe out too much of it, you may feel dizzy, lightheaded, shaky, numb, or tingly, especially in your hands, feet, or around your mouth. Some people also have chest pain, muscle tightness, or feel as if they might pass out.

You might hear about it in therapy or first-aid discussions, where people learn how to slow their breathing during panic attacks. A doctor might ask whether someone has been breathing too fast to see if anxiety is part of the problem. It can feel frightening, but the feeling itself often improves when breathing becomes slower and more controlled. Still, symptoms like chest pain or severe shortness of breath should not be brushed off, because they can also appear in more serious medical problems.

So, this is not simply being out of breath. It is a physical response in which stress, fear, or illness pushes breathing out of balance. In many cases it passes once the person calms down and slows their breathing, but it still deserves attention because the cause may be emotional, physical, or both.
