Imagine a salty liquid around a fresh plant cell. That liquid has more dissolved material in it than the cell does. In biology, a hypertonic solution is a solution with a higher concentration of solutes, such as salt or sugar, than the cell or liquid it is compared with. Because of that difference, water moves out of the cell, and the cell shrinks. You can picture this when salt pulls water out of food. In medicine, the word is also used for muscles or body tissue that are too tense or have increased tone, such as a muscle that does not relax easily.
The word hypertonic comes from the Greek roots hyper (meaning over or excessive) and tonos (meaning tension). While it can broadly mean relating to high tension—you might hear about a patient with hypertonic muscles that are overly contracted—its most famous application is in biology and chemistry when discussing solutions.
A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of solutes—such as salt, sugar, or other dissolved substances—than the solution it is being compared to (usually the fluid inside a cell). This difference creates a concentration gradient. Through the process of osmosis, water naturally moves from areas of high water concentration (inside the cell) to areas of lower water concentration (the salty or sugary solution outside).
Consequently, when a cell is submerged in a hypertonic environment, it loses water and begins to shrink. In animal cells, this shriveling is known as crenation. A classic everyday example is pickling: cucumbers become wrinkly and firm because the salty brine is a hypertonic solution that draws the water out of them.
Beyond the lab, hypertonic can describe a physiological state of excessive muscle tone or tension. A doctor might describe a muscle as hypertonic if it stays unusually tight or resists normal relaxation. So, whether you are describing a shrinking cell, a tense muscle, or the strong pull of a salty brine, hypertonic points to a state of higher concentration or increased tension that changes the balance around it.
