Hypergastrinemia is the medical term for an abnormally high concentration of gastrin in the blood. Gastrin is a hormone made mainly in the stomach and the upper small intestine. Its normal job is to signal the stomach to release acid, which helps digest food. When gastrin levels rise too much, that signal can become too strong or continue for too long.

This condition is important because it may lead to excess stomach acid, although not every case does. In some people, it is linked to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, in which gastrin-producing tumors cause very high acid output and can lead to severe ulcers, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. In other people, the rise in gastrin happens because the stomach is making too little acid, so the body responds by sending out more of the hormone. It can also be seen in people taking proton pump inhibitors or in people with chronic inflammation of the stomach lining.

The word is mostly used by doctors, researchers, and students in medicine. It often appears in lab reports, articles about digestive disease, and explanations of hormone-related stomach disorders. In short, it does not name a single disease by itself. Instead, it names a finding: the level of gastrin in the blood is higher than normal, and that finding can point to several possible causes.
