"Hydrothermal" describes processes, systems, or features that involve the movement or action of heated water. It is used most often in geology, geochemistry, and related sciences. The main idea is straightforward: water underground is heated by magma, volcanic activity, or the Earth's natural internal heat, then moves through cracks and small spaces in rock. As it travels, it can dissolve minerals, change the rocks around it, and carry heat from one place to another.

This hot, mineral-rich water appears in many forms. On land, it is seen in hot springs, geysers, and areas of rock that have been changed by hot fluids. Beneath the ocean, hydrothermal vents form where heated water rises from the seafloor, often near mid-ocean ridges. Some of these vents are called "black smokers" because they release dark, mineral-rich fluid into the cold seawater around them. These places are especially interesting because they support unusual ecosystems built around chemical energy rather than sunlight.

Hydrothermal activity is also important because it helps form many valuable mineral deposits. As the hot water cools, the minerals it carries can come out of the fluid and collect in cracks or veins. This is one way deposits of metals such as gold, silver, and copper are formed. Hydrothermal processes also affect groundwater chemistry and can reshape rocks over long periods of time.

So, whether the term is used for a hot spring in a national park, a vent on the deep seafloor, or the formation of mineral deposits underground, it always points back to the same idea: heat and water working together inside the Earth.
