However, not all hydropower requires massive dams. "Run-of-river" systems divert a portion of a river's flow through turbines without creating a large reservoir, reducing their environmental impact. Pumped storage hydropower is another method where water is pumped uphill to a reservoir during off-peak hours (using excess electricity from other sources) and then released back down to generate power when demand is high – essentially acting as a giant battery.
Hydropower is considered a renewable energy source because the water cycle constantly replenishes it. It's also relatively clean, producing no direct greenhouse gas emissions during operation. However, large dams can have significant environmental consequences, impacting river ecosystems and displacing communities.
So, while hydropower offers a powerful and sustainable way to generate electricity, careful planning and consideration of its potential impacts are crucial for responsible implementation. It's a key piece in the puzzle of building a cleaner energy future.
