Imagine the universe just after the Big Bang—it consisted almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Hydrogen is truly everywhere. As the first element on the periodic table, it has an atomic number of 1, meaning each atom consists of just one proton and one electron. This fundamental simplicity makes it incredibly versatile.

While you cannot see or smell it, hydrogen is essential for life. It is part of water molecules ($H_{2}O$), which every living organism needs. It is also found in sugars, fats, and many other compounds in living things. In plants, hydrogen is part of the chemical changes that help store energy from sunlight. In animals, it is present in the food that the body breaks down to release energy.

Beyond biology, hydrogen has many industrial uses. It is used in oil refining, in producing ammonia for fertilizers that help grow much of the world's food, and in hydrogenation, a process that can turn some oils into more solid fats.

Scientists are also researching hydrogen as a cleaner energy source. In a fuel cell, it can combine with oxygen to produce electricity, with water as the main byproduct at the point of use. Even so, hydrogen is not an energy source that simply appears in nature in pure form in large amounts; it usually has to be produced from water or other materials, which takes energy. From powering stars to possibly helping power cars, ships, and factories, this tiny element plays a big part in both nature and modern industry.
