The word "humpback" is best known from the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). The whale gets its name from the rounded rise on its back, which is easy to notice when it arches before a dive. Because of this very clear shape, the name became strongly linked with this species, and for many people that is the first meaning that comes to mind.

But the word is not limited to whales. It has also been used for a person or animal with a back that looks rounded, raised, or hunched. In older writing, you may see it used as a noun for such a person, but that use is now often seen as insensitive. More neutral medical or everyday wording is usually better. The adjective "humpbacked" can also describe something with a high arch or rounded shape, such as a bridge.

At its core, the word joins the idea of a "hump" with "back," so the central image is always a back or upper surface that rises in a curve. In modern English, the whale meaning is by far the most common and safest to use. The other meanings still exist, especially in older texts or in descriptive phrases, but they need more care because they can sound blunt when used about people.
