Imagine a vehicle that seems to float just above the ground or water. That's essentially a hovercraft: a machine that moves on a cushion of air, so it can travel over water, sand, mud, ice, and flat land. You might picture one racing across a beach or reaching people during a flood. They have been used for transport, rescue work, military missions, and recreation. The name is also often used in a general way for vehicles that use this air-cushion idea.

A hovercraft (also known as an air-cushion vehicle or ACV) is a craft capable of traveling over land, water, mud, ice, and other surfaces. It achieves this by creating a cushion of air beneath it, lifting the hull above the surface. This lift is typically created by a large fan that forces air downwards. Once airborne (though not flying in the traditional sense!), the hovercraft can move forward using propellers or ducted fans.

The idea behind the hovercraft isn't new—sketches for similar vehicles date back to the 19th century. However, practical development really took off after World War II. Hovercraft have found applications in a variety of fields: military operations for rapid deployment and amphibious landings, search-and-rescue missions in flooded areas or difficult terrain, passenger transport such as high-speed ferries, and recreational use, including racing.

While early hovercraft were often noisy and inefficient, modern designs can be more streamlined and efficient. You might encounter them in coastal regions, on large lakes, or in places where ordinary boats or wheeled vehicles would struggle. The term "hovercraft" is sometimes used loosely to describe vehicles that use air-cushion technology, including smaller personal versions. So if you see a vehicle gliding over both land and water, it may be using the simple but clever idea behind a hovercraft: riding on air.
