A child at camp, a student at college, or someone living in a new city may feel it. Sometimes a smell, a song, or a small memory can bring it on. It is a natural feeling, and it often becomes easier with time, connection, and new routines.

Homesickness is the sadness or distress a person feels when they are away from home, family, and familiar surroundings. It is not just about a building or a hometown. It is often about missing a whole sense of belonging: the people you love, the habits of daily life, the sounds and smells you know well, and the comfort of being in a place that feels like your own.

This feeling often appears during times of change. Someone might feel it when leaving for school, moving for work, traveling for a long time, or settling into a new country. Children and adults can both experience it. For some, it shows up as quiet sadness and longing. For others, it can bring anxiety, loneliness, trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, or even physical discomfort such as headaches or stomach pain.
