"Homeschool" describes the practice of educating a child mainly at home instead of sending them to a traditional school. A parent usually leads the teaching, but a guardian, private tutor, online program, or shared teaching group may also be involved. The word can be used as a verb, as in "They homeschool their children," or as an adjective, as in "a homeschool program."

In the past, this kind of education was often linked to rural life, distance from schools, or strong religious or philosophical beliefs. Today, families choose it for many reasons. Some want a course of study that fits a child's pace and interests. Others want more flexibility, support for a disability or special learning need, a certain set of values, or a different social environment.

There is no single way to do it. Some families follow a structured curriculum that looks much like school subjects taught in a classroom. Others use a looser, child-led style often called "unschooling," where lessons grow out of the child's interests and everyday life. Many homeschooling families also use online classes, co-ops, local programs, tutors, libraries, museums, and community activities as part of the child's education.

The exact meaning can shift a little depending on context. In everyday speech, people usually mean that the family has chosen home-based schooling instead of regular school attendance. In legal or official settings, the word may connect to specific rules about registration, testing, record-keeping, or approved teaching plans. Those rules differ from place to place.

So when someone says a child is "homeschooled," the idea is usually clear: most of that child's formal education happens outside the standard school system, often at home, under the close direction of family or chosen instructors.
